Not many people know the Ethnological Museum Herrnhut near Dresden. For Rotterdam artist Sarojini Lewis, the museum’s collection on the missionary activities of the Herrnhut Brethren is the starting point for a research on the traces of cultural identities in collective memory.

Sarojini Lewis (* 1984) goes in search of the personal stories behind the notes, objects and diaries of the Herrnhuters, who, among other things, also missioned in the territory of present-day Surinam. What cannot be reconstructed from the existing material offers space for the imagination, whereby the artist leaves the boundaries between the imagined and the real, between the archival finds and the fabricated documents and photographs open.

Visual artist and curator Sarojini Lewis (1984) works primarily with conceptual performances and installations, combining photography and textual material. She organized various exhibitions in South America and the Netherlands.
