Opening – G? Flaggschiffe

G? Flaggschiffe
Opening of Saeed Foroghi’s art in construction project.
July 3, 2021, 6 pm

With the new construction of the schools and the creation of a green space in the immediate vicinity of GEH8, a long-standing brownfield site has been eliminated and the surrounding urban space has been enhanced. GEH8 invited artist Saeed Foroghi to conceive a work for the facade and exterior of their building. The artistic work should focus on GEH8 as a place of production and presentation of art and culture, and should be easily noticeable in the newly created public urban space.
Flags, apart from their meaning generated by the combination of visual elements such as colors and shapes, can also be carriers of metaphorical and symbolic content, depending on the location and the way they are used. In every flag hoisted in a solemn ceremony, a sign of power, belonging and identity is also manifested, which at the same time requires a distinction between power and identity vis-à-vis an “other”.

Saeed Foroghi’s works with flags are a kind of effort to decontaminate these symbols. His artistic works revolve around the question of belonging and loss, of locating one’s identity in borderlands of different states as well as between traditional gender roles. The principle of inversion often found in his works represents a transfer of this search into artistic method.

We thank all sponsors, donors and supporters from the bottom of our hearts and are extremely pleased to now be able to open the artistic work – after a difficult and rather protracted phase of financing.
Simultaneously with the flag installation, on July 3 we will present the design of the wall elements by children and young people as part of our cultural education program OURSPACE.
