That was our graffiti workshop 2024!

Anyone who moves around in urban areas is inevitably confronted with vibrant colors and images on house walls. Graffiti forms an integral part of the visual landscape that surrounds us in everyday life. This phenomenon raises the question of space and ownership: Who is claiming vacant spaces and areas? What resources remain? The effects of inequality also manifest themselves in limited opportunities for social participation due to the scarcity of space, both in nature and on a cultural level. In distribution battles, the winner always seems to triumph in his dominance – but does “the winner takes it all” really apply? Through an intensive examination of graffiti and street art, the participants were encouraged to reflect on the realities of their own lives. By engaging with street art and using so-called “legal plains”, the participants reclaimed legal spaces and areas to create places for creative expression and give space to the common prejudice of graffiti as vandalism – because: “The winner takes it all? – Take it easy!”.

The workshop week took place from October 14-18, 2024.

The project “The winner takes it all? – Take it easy!” is a cooperation between GEH8 Kunst Raum Ateliers, the children’s and youth center EMMERS, Lackstreichekleber e.V. and Spike Dresden e.V. and is funded by the program ‘Kultur Macht Stark – Bündnisse für Bildung’, supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
