The Reading Club Festival: Ally Klein – The Whale

“Literature as a dare – Ally Klein shows how it can be done.” Wolfgang Huber-Lang

Saul has stopped being an artist. He sees himself as a construction worker and has only one last major project in mind: to return an enigmatic building – the Whale – to its purposeless original state. For once a photographer had covered this soft, ashen concrete inside the cube with tiles and deformed it into a studio. Saul now unconditionally puts all his energy into this work until he is completely exhausted and at the end of his rope.
On the one hand, The Whale develops into a sensitive relationship story. A triangle develops with Q/Keough as Saul’s companion and Aezra, Saul’s writing brother. On the other hand, the novel addresses the meaning of art. The power of storytelling and language are of particular importance.
