Günter „Baby“ Sommer meets The Saxonz

The Kunst.Raum.Konzerte offer a platform for the fusion of sound-, image- and space-based arts. Thereby music is always joined by another art form. Each band develops – besides playing their own pieces – a composition in real-time together with the audience.

GÜNTER “BABY” SOMMER

is one of the most important representatives of contemporary European jazz, who has developed an unmistakable musical language.

Sommer was born in Dresden in 1943 and studied at the Hochschule für Musik ‘Carl Maria von Weber’. His musical contributions to the most important jazz groups of the GDR, such as the Ernst-Ludwig-Petrowksy-Trio, the Zentralquartett and the Ulrich Gumpert Workshopband, enabled Sommer to enter the international scene. Thus Sommer not only worked in trio with Wadada Leo Smith and Peter Kowald, but also met such important players as Peter Brötzmann, Fred van Hove, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Evan Parker and Cecil Taylor. Sommer’s solo playing sensitized him to colloborations with writers like Günter Grass.

Sommer’s discography includes over 100 published audio recordings. As a professor at the Dresden University of Music, he influences the professional communication of contemporary jazz to future generations.

THE SAXONZ

belong as multiple German champions to the national elite in breakdance. On stage, the ensemble of the best B-Boys and B-Girls Saxony’s presents fascinating shows with spectacular tricks and breathtaking acrobatics at the highest level. Besides travelling to competitions in Germany and abroad, THE SAXONZ dedicates itself intensively to the promotion of young talents and organizes own events in Saxony. Some members of the group also regularly take part in dance and theater productions, e.g. at the “Festspielhaus HELLERAU” or the “Staatsschauspiel Dresden” and work on their own film and theater projects. For their artistic work THE SAXONZ were honored with the Art Prize of the Hanna Johannes Arras Foundation in 2016. In September 2016 the production “SYMPHONIX” in cooperation with the Elbland Philharmonic Orchestra Saxony, the State Theatres of Saxony and the choreographer Raphael Hillebrand also celebrated its premiere. The video clip “Life is a Dance” by award-winning filmmaker Sebastian Linda also offers an insight into the group’s repertoire.
