Fo[u]r Alto

Fo[u]r Alto

is the quadrupling of the alto saxophone as a unified sound body.

Since the ensemble was founded in 2008, the four Berlin saxophonists Frank Gratkowski, Christian Weidner, Benjamin Weidekamp and Florian Bergmann have found a unique sound language. Collective improvisations combine with Gratkowski’s compositions. A wide variety of techniques are employed, such as spectral analysis, intervallic microtonal concepts, various extended playing techniques, and shimmering, dense bands of sound created by multiplying instrumental multiphonics.

The concept of a spatial music plays an important role. The musicians position themselves around the audience to give them a multidirectional musical experience. Those who have already experienced Fo[u]r Alto in April 2010 at geh8 Kunstraum know how intense the experience of this concert is in connection with the special acoustics of the room. And he will not miss to experience it another time. More info and sound samples at
