“Traces of Jewish Life in Hellerau in the 1930s and the Rediscovery of the Garden City as a Nazi Place of Longing” – lecture commemorating the 85th anniversary of the pogroms in 1938 by Robert Badura (Institute for Saxon History and Folklore, Dresden ISGV).<\/p>\n

Jewish residents of Gartenstadt Hellerau were increasingly exposed to repression after 1933 and had to experience various forms of violence and discrimination. Meanwhile, the Garden City was “rediscovered” and remarketed by various parties as a National Socialist model settlement. And in the sense of the Nazi autarky policy, which was supposed to make Germany economically independent from foreign countries, it suddenly played a new role. The lecture aims to contrast attempts at appropriation of the site by National Socialism with the increasingly restricted possibilities of Jewish life in the garden city of the 1930s.<\/p>\n
