GEH8 wants to combine environmental protection with design and was looking for unusual and fresh designs for a greening of its east facade. The best entries were awarded by a jury of experts and the concept of the first place winner is to be implemented structurally by summer 2023. The project is a cooperation between GEH8, the Environmental Office, the Urban Planning Office and the Office of Structural Engineering and Real Estate Management of the City of Dresden.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An interdisciplinary jury of experts consisting of artists, designers and experts in landscape planning awarded prizes to the 3 best designs and also compiled a selection of submissions that will be published in an accompanying catalog. The consistently high quality of the submissions made it extremely difficult for the jury. In the end, four universities responded to our call, offered a teaching project on the topic, and 27 submissions that met the conditions of the call were admitted to the competition. A wide variety of approaches were taken, which beautifully demonstrate how diverse the topic of fa\u00e7ade greening can be dealt with.<\/p>\n

BACKGROUND TO THE CALL FOR ENTRIES<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Weather extremes such as heavy rainfall events, extreme summer temperatures, or periods of drought are increasing seriously and putting a strain on cities and their inhabitants in particular. The greening of buildings – especially the greening of roofs and facades – makes it possible to accommodate greenery where there is no more space at ground level because of the buildings. Greening buildings can reduce the heat-storing effect of a building in summer and also restore existing space for rainwater retention. This has a demonstrably positive effect on the microclimate, the quality of living and the quality of stay. In addition, the greened building area has a positive effect on flora and fauna, air quality and sound reflection. Particularly in densely built-up neighborhoods, greening buildings not only benefits the ecology, but also protects the health of citizens. This is because the sight of greenery reduces stress levels and positively influences attention and concentration, both in adults and in children and young people.<\/p>\n

Against this background, the city of Dresden adopted the guideline Dresden baut gr\u00fcn (Dresden builds green) in 2019. According to this guideline, all municipal building construction projects – i.e. new buildings, conversions and extensions – must include greenery on the facade or roof of the building. The greening of the GEH8 facade extends the existing green roof and completes the site as a lighthouse project.<\/p>\n
